It is Our Mission to Always Operate in Excellence

At Dewey School of Excellence, we are committed to always operating in excellence. We will develop all scholars into college bound graduates, and model citizens through rigorous, engaging instruction, a strong and diverse enrichment program, and a strong school, community, and family partnership. We will lean heavily on these systems to ensure we are meeting the needs of all our scholars in their journey through high school and college graduation. By establishing an inclusive Dewey School community, we will build trust, develop leaders, and promote life-long learning and success for all scholars, families, and staff.

Principal's Message

From The Principal: Cleophas (CJ) Rodgers

First off, I would like to say that I’m honored to serve as principal in the same community in which I grew up. With this honor comes huge responsibility, accountability, and an unmatched drive and passion to ensure that every scholar who puts on the Dewey School of Excellence uniform receives a high quality, data driven, rigorous, enriched academic and social experience.

The “Dewey Experience” will challenge students, staff, parents and the community to operate in Excellence and “Dew” Excellence in every aspect. From providing rigorous, challenging instruction every minute of every day, to entering the building and classrooms in an orderly “ready to learn” fashion, to wearing proper uniform with belt and shoes tied every minute of every day, we, as The “D,” take pride in being EXCELLENT at every little detail.

While we will always have high expectations for ALL stakeholders, we will also work diligently to support and push our young men and women to have a growth mindset so that they become creators, innovators, and trailblazers who create opportunity and bridges. As a result we are committed to creating opportunities for our families and scholars to showcase their creativity through our robust and diverse curricular enrichment programs. These programs include fine arts, graphic design and editing, performing arts, Science Technology Engineering Mathematical (STEM) programs, Career and Technical Education (CTE), mentoring, and athletics. These experiences are critical to the development of our scholars and provide scholars a diverse range of vehicles to access and excel in a rigorous high school and collegiate environment. We expect ALL of our scholars to take part in these opportunities.

Our History

Building on Our History to
Create a Culture of Excellence

george-dewey.jpg

Dewey School of Excellence is named in honor of George Dewey (1837-1917). A member of the United States Navy, Dewey is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. He is the only person to have attained the rank of Admiral of the Navy, which is the most senior rank.

Dewey School of Excellence opened in 1901 and originally contained 22 classrooms, an auditorium, library, and gym. It was the first fireproof structure of its kind in Chicago.

Additional land was acquired in 1968 to accommodate additional recreation space and temporary classrooms when enrollment at the school soared to nearly 1,500 before Hope Middle School opened in 1971 (now a high school).

A Child Parent Center opened south of the main Dewey building in 1975 and contains 6 classrooms.

Today the building contains 27.5 classrooms including 3 state of the art computer labs and serves 370 students.

AUSL

AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Dewey School of Excellence to AUSL in 2013 as a turnaround school. Turning around a school is one approach that CPS uses to improve neighborhood schools that have been failing for many years. The transformation begins with the new leadership and teachers in the building to deliver effective instruction and the right climate and culture to the same neighborhood students.

AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
